Opatija, often called the Nice of the Adriatic, is one of the most popular tourist resorts in Croatia and a place with the longest tourist tradition on the eastern coast of the Adriatic. The Austrian empress Maria Anna made Opatija a popular excursion destination of the inhabitants from Rijeka, then of the Italian s and Austrians. Opatija was the first in the region of the Adriatic to introduce tourist statistics already in 1884, and the first hotel on the Adriatic, called Kvarner, was built by the Society of the Southern Railways in 1884; situated on the very coast and luxuriously furnished, it attracted exclusively elite guests. With the construction of the hotel, Opatija became an elite summer resort, so that, apart from the 12km-long promenade (Lungomare) from Volosko - Opatija - Lovran, a mountain path from Opatija to Veprinac and further to Ucka was laid. Already in 1889 Opatija was declared the first climatic seaside resort on the Adriatic, which strengthened its position as the most fashionable tourist resort. Numerous tourists and owners of the villas contributed by planting exotic plants to the horticultural grandeur. Opatija was so attractive that, at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, it was visited by the then most prominent personalities of the noble rank - Princess Luise von Sachsen Coburg, the Romanian king Charles I, the Swedish-Norwegian king Oscar, etc. Tourist development is Opatija's main feature even today. Favourable climate, well-maintained landscape, maintained beaches and lively entertainment throughout the year make this place one of the m ost elite summer resorts in Croatia today. The offer includes 20-odd hotels, a large number of catering establishments, sports and recreational facilities, and especially entertainment opportunities. Many events in Opatija have a long tradition and offer a high-level entertainment: carnival (January/February), International Yachting Regatta (in May), the Opatija Yachting Cup (in November). Opatija is also a national centre in which Porin, the prize for the best musical pieces is awarded (in March), as well as one of the most important congress centres in Croatia. One of the best restaurants in Croatia are open in Opatija throughout the year.

Opatija, a town, harbour, tourist, summer and climatic resort on the foot of Mt. Ucka, situated at the eastern coast of Istria in the Rijeka Bay, 13 km southwest of Rijeka. The coastal region formed of limestone, in which Opatija lies, is protected from the north and northwest by Ucka. Climatic conditions are favourable, with relatively mild winters; the mean air temperature in January attains 4.7 °C, and in July 23.3 °C; 2,230 hours of sunshine a year. The whole narrow coastal strip is covered with evergreen vegetation; there are no loose soils or water springs. Ucka holds the moist air and clouds driven by the westerly winds, so that Opatija has lower rainfall and more hours of sunshine than Rijeka. The climate and the specific historic and geographic features favoured Opatija's rapid development. The completion of the railway Vienna - Trieste (1857) and the branch railroad from Pivka (then called Sent Peter) to Rijeka (1873) opened the way from Vienna to Opatija. The climatic advantages of Opatija were famous already in the first half of the 19th century. Chief occupation is tourism. The harbour consists of a pier and a protected basin. The inner part of it is protected from all winds except from those blowing from the first quadrant; the bora is moderate, blowing from the east; the sirocco and the easterly winds are rather strong and heave the sea. The outer part of the port is designed for larger vessels, and smaller vessels can land at the inner part. The anchoring ground lies 500 m off the coast, but is far from being safe during strong easterly and south-easterly winds. The harbour comprises a marina. Situated on the road (M2, E751) Rijeka - Pula.

From its first tourist days Opatija is just the same - lovely, casual, refined. truly a lady. And in fact, it shouldn't have to be called Opatija at all.
Several settlements situated at the sea coast - Črnikovica, Volosko, Lipovica, Škrbići, Opatija and Vasanska allied to crate Opatija. Among those settlements the oldest is certainly - Volosko. Volosko was the centre of the kotar - the lowest, but never the less, very esteemed form of state organisation. As the centre of kotar, Volosko becomes not only fairly important port, but also a lovely settlement for all the clergy of that time.
At the end of 19th century, Hotel Kvarner, the first hotel in Opatija was built on a sizeable piece of land that stretched out from Opatija harbour to the church of St Jacob. At the same time the accompanying infrastructure are being built - roads, seaside promenades as well as the ones to Učka, pipeline and a restaurant. Since then, Opatija is, in summer and winter, resort of the prominent people.
The news of a gorgeous settlement on the Adriatic coast spread quickly through Europe. Several years later Opatija was officially declared climate resort, which encourages further building of hotels, apartments. Opatija has it's own electric lighting and electricity from the power plant, with the gift of the Romanian royal couple the extension of the promenade to the slopes of Učka was built. Opatija came into the new century with more than sixteen kilometres long forest promenade and seven more of the coastal promenade to Lovran, which made it unique in the tourist world of the time.
The list of all the prominent people enchanted by Opatija's nature, parks, hotels, apartments would be too long. Many crowned heads have visited Opatija - Austrian emperor Franz Josef, German and Swedish royal couple, Luxemburg dukes, Romanian royal couple, Greek king Georg, prince Vilim Hohenzollern, Bulgarian queen and many princes, archdukes.
Opatija attracted artists as well. Famous Russian writer Anton Pavlovich Chehov relaxed in Opatija, and popular American ballerina Isidora Duncan wrote in her memoirs that she "learned" her specific dance movements from the Opatija's palm trees, watching their leaves shaking on the mild breeze.

A great number of them originate from very distant corners of the world and they aren't part of typical Mediterranean vegetation. In historical documents we find information on the creation of the park between 1845. and 1860., around villa "Angiolina" that was owned by Igonio Scarpa, great nature lover. In that part of the garden are many plants from Japan, China, South America, Australia and other parts of the world.

Apartment buildings are harmoniously incorporated with the scenery rich with plant life. Apartments, villas and hotels are incorporated in the architecture of the 1890s. The town is mostly known for its marina. In the centre of the town is a long sandy beach offering various recreational possibilities. Ičići offer many sport activties for those who seek active vacation; water sports, tennis, bicycling.
Ika is a small settlement on the west coast of the Kvarner bay. Name of this town I often mentioned in crossword puzzles. This old fishermen settlement is today a lively tourist centre, with long promenade connected to nearby London and Volosko. Ika is a place of rich marine tradition; in 19th century it was an important port and shipyard. With the development of tourism on Opatija Riviera, and thanks to the lushes vegetation and pleasant climate, Ika becomes one of the more popular tourist centres of the region. Nursery garden for decorative plant is also in Ika.
Lovran is the oldest settlement mentioned in the historical sources at he eastern coast of Istria. In the 7th century, an unknown writer from Ravena mentions Lauriana (ancient name of Lovran) in his travel logs. Priest Paulinus from Aquilea also mentions Lovran in a song he wrote after the death of count Erih of Strasbourg, who died in 799 in a battle with Croats in the vicinity of today's Lovran, on what was then known as Mont Laurentus.
In 1153 Arabic geographer El Idrisi mentions Lovran as an important marine and trading town. According to him, Lovran was them much more important than nearby towns Plomin and Labin, that were very important urban centres in the roman times.
Although the people of Lovran were excellent seamen and traders, if it hadn't been for Opatija and its tourism, Lovran would have followed the destiny of many forgotten costal towns. The Lovran seamen could not compete with steamboats in their beautiful but slow sailing boats, so the town could progress. And then, more to the north, a new star has raised - Opatija.
Luckily for Lovran and its people, Opatija started spreading incredibly fast, and it soon became to crowded for all who wanted to build a villa, tavern or a hotel. But just a little bit further south there was an old town with pretty well developed infrastructure and with so much greenery ant the slopes of Učka. Clever people of Lovran soon realized that their future was in tourism. They accepted foreign investors, which they also will soon join. So, by the end of 19th century, Lovran became a part of Opatija tourism, but with a particular urban look. The same story already known in Opatija repeated - hotels and pensions were built, more and more eminent guests started to arrive. Lush Mediterranean vegetation, arranged beaches, numerous villas and hotels make Lovran one of the most attractive destinations on Opatija Riviera. Beaches. From Lovran to Opatija and further more to Volosko there is a 12 kilometres long seaside promenade.

A particular feature of the Krk landscape consists of the thick drystone walls or gromače, and the shepherds' stone-built folds on the plateau area above the Baška valley.
Care about the preservation and conservation of the environment is ongoing and systematic. Proof of this is given by the two blue pennants in the Punat Marina, the Big Beach at Baška, auto camp Ježavac, Lukobran beach, FKK Politin and Koralj beach..

The fresh fish, the shrimp and other crustaceans and shellfish are today a must in the local cuisine, as are many kinds of vegetable dishes. All this is prepared with Krk olive oil, of superlative quality.
A festive day lunch is almost bound to include food using local pasta, called šurlice, makaroni and njoki, with various different kinds of sauce, and a particular value is placed on Krk lamb, the local sheep's cheese, and prosciutto.
All these original dishes are to be found on the tables and menus of a hundred island restaurants and taverns, which also of course offer the standard international cuisine. The wining and dining is one of the strongest of aces in the hand of the Krk hospitality industry.
With all this, the island people are fond of taking a glass of locally produced wine. We can thoroughly recommend the vernacular dry white wine with its own appellation controlée - Vrbnička žlahtina.
Various kinds of local grappa are also made from grapes, with or without aromatic herb flavourings; according to local custom, this, together with dried figs, is offered to newly arriving guests by way of welcome.
